"These will vary in every human being; but knowledge is the same for every mind, and every mind may and ought to be trained to receive it"
About this Quote
The intent is educational, but the subtext is political. By insisting knowledge is universally available, Wright is making a claim about who counts as a full person. “May and ought to be trained” turns schooling from a privilege into a moral obligation. Not “can,” not “might,” but “ought”: society bears responsibility for building minds capable of receiving what’s already there to be received. That phrasing also smuggles in a confidence in institutions - or at least in the possibility of constructing better ones - at a time when education was often designed to reproduce obedience rather than cultivate agency.
Context matters: Wright moved in reformist, secular, and feminist currents that treated ignorance as a tool of control. The quote works because it’s both egalitarian and disciplined. She doesn’t romanticize difference; she limits it. She makes knowledge the common currency, then demands we stop rationing the mint.
