"They who are of the opinion that money will do everything may very well be suspected to do everything for money"
About this Quote
The elegance is in the asymmetry. Savile doesn’t claim certainty; he says “may very well be suspected,” a politician’s scalpel of plausible deniability that still cuts deep. Suspicion becomes both the verdict and the method: we can’t see someone’s private motives, but we can infer them from the worldview they broadcast. If your theory of society is that everything has a price, you’ve confessed what you’re willing to sell.
Context matters. Savile wrote in an 18th-century British political culture where patronage, “places,” and the commerce of influence were not bugs but features. This is a period when ideals of civic virtue were loudly praised precisely because corruption was so routinely practiced. The line functions like a compact anti-bribery argument for a world that can’t quite imagine politics without bribery: if money is your universal solvent, you will dissolve yourself first.
Subtextually, it’s also a status critique. The rich could afford to pretend they were above cash while using it to lubricate power; Savile drags that hypocrisy into daylight. He’s not romantic about human nature. He’s practical about incentives, and ruthless about what people reveal when they call themselves “realists.”
