Success Quote by Rick Moody

"This is odd, but there are certain things that are really embarrassing to talk about - one is my job and the success that I've had in it, and the other is money"

About this Quote

Moody’s “This is odd” is doing a lot of pre-emptive work: it’s a hedge, a throat-clear, a small confession that he knows the rules of the room and is about to break them anyway. What follows is a neat x-ray of contemporary literary etiquette, where the sanctioned subjects are craft, suffering, and maybe politics, but not the two things that keep an artist materially and socially legible: career status and cash.

The subtext is less modesty than a wary awareness of how success curdles into a character judgment. In the fiction world, admitting you’ve “had” success risks sounding like you’re laundering ego; admitting you haven’t risks sounding like you’re auditioning for sympathy. Either way, you’ve stepped onto a moral treadmill. Money is worse because it collapses the romance of art into numbers. It invites the kinds of questions the culture pretends not to ask writers but absolutely does: Are you pure? Are you paid? Did you sell out, or did the market finally notice you?

Moody pairs “my job” with “success” as if the work itself isn’t the embarrassing part; it’s the public scoreboard attached to it. That’s the writerly double bind: you’re supposed to want readers and recognition, but you’re also supposed to act surprised when they show up. The line lands because it names a social performance most artists are trained to execute - grateful, self-effacing, vaguely allergic to their own receipts - and then admits, with a wince, that the performance is exhausting.
