That’s classic statesman rhetoric: make the audience feel included, then define the terms of seriousness.

The paired construction - “by nature… by conviction” - is especially shrewd. “Nature” suggests an almost genetic national temperament; “conviction” suggests a chosen moral posture. Together, they fuse identity with judgment: realism isn’t merely a policy stance, it’s who Australians are at their best. In a global context where leaders are often accused of hype, ideology, or theatrics, Gillard is staking out the opposite brand: the grown-up in the room.

Subtext: trust me because I am one of us, and “us” doesn’t embellish. The irony, of course, is that declaring your people uniquely resistant to overstatement is itself a kind of overstatement - but it’s the sort that works because it sounds like restraint.
