“Thought is made in the mouth” is Tristan Tzara at his most Dada: a grin with teeth, aimed straight at the solemn idea that thinking is a clean, private, brain-only operation. He drags cognition down into the messy apparatus of spit, breath, tongue, and noise. In Dada’s universe, that’s not a cute metaphor. It’s a demolition charge.

The line flips the prestige hierarchy that props up “serious” culture. Western tradition tends to crown the mind and treat speech as its obedient delivery system. Tzara reverses it: language doesn’t express thought; it manufactures it. Meaning is not a pure thing you later wrap in words. It’s forged in the friction of articulation - the stumbles, the rhythms, the accidents of sound. That fits Dada’s obsession with chance procedures, nonsense poems, and performances that made audiences feel the floorboards of logic creak.

The subtext is a political one, too, even when it’s wearing clown makeup. Tzara comes out of the World War I moment when official “reason” and rhetorical grandeur had just marched millions into mechanized slaughter. If rational discourse can justify catastrophe, Dada asks why we should keep treating polished language as truth’s servant. By relocating thought to the mouth, Tzara spotlights the bodily, social dimension of ideas: thought happens in public, in argument, in propaganda, in the contagious spread of slogans.

It’s also a warning. If thought is made in the mouth, whoever controls mouths - schools, states, newspapers, stages - gets a hand on the assembly line of consciousness.
