Daily Inspiration Quote by Hans Urs von Balthasar

"Thus it is necessary to commence from an inescapable duality: the finite is not the infinite"

About this Quote

Balthasar opens with a hard brake on spiritual daydreaming: you do not get to slide from human scale into divine scale by metaphor, mood, or moral effort. “Inescapable duality” is less a bleak confession than a guardrail. It tells the reader that any serious theology has to begin where modern people least want to begin: with limits that cannot be negotiated away. The finite is not a rough draft of the infinite; it isn’t simply “lesser infinity,” waiting to be topped up. It is a different order of being.

The rhetorical force lies in the bluntness of the grammar. “Thus it is necessary” sounds like an engineer, not a mystic, and that’s deliberate. Balthasar is insisting on method. Get the ontology right, or everything else becomes either sentimental (“God is just the best version of us”) or ideological (“history will become heaven if we manage it correctly”).

The subtext is anti-reductionist. He’s pushing back against both secular flattening (religion as psychology or ethics in costume) and religious triumphalism (human institutions confusing themselves with God). In Catholic terms, this is the precondition for grace: if the finite already contained the infinite, revelation would be redundant, incarnation would be theater, and salvation would be self-help.

Context matters: mid-20th-century theology was wrestling with existentialism, Marxism, and a resurgent confidence in human projects. Balthasar’s line refuses the era’s favorite shortcut - turning transcendence into immanence with better PR - and sets up his larger claim: only a true “otherness” makes love, beauty, and redemption something that arrives, not something we manufacture.
