Life & Wisdom Quote by Ovid

"Time is generally the best doctor.!"

About this Quote

A poet of exile and metamorphosis would, of course, cast time as medicine: it’s the only force large enough to reshape what feels permanent. Ovid’s line flatters patience while quietly admitting the limits of every other remedy. Not the physician’s craft, not philosophy, not even art reliably cures grief, humiliation, or desire. Time does. Or, more precisely, time blunts.

The phrasing is slyly pragmatic. “Generally” is the hinge: it keeps the claim from becoming pious consolation. Time isn’t a saint; it’s a mechanism. Some wounds scar, some injustices calcify, some losses never get “better” so much as they get absorbed into the self. Ovid leaves room for that darker truth, and the restraint makes the comfort feel earned rather than sentimental.

Context matters. Ovid wrote in a Roman world that prized control: law, empire, lineage, reputation. Then Augustus banished him to the edges of the map, where the poet spent years pleading, rationalizing, and aching in the Tristia and Epistulae ex Ponto. In that light, “time” becomes both hope and accusation. Hope, because the emperor might soften. Accusation, because the only “doctor” available to an exiled writer is the slow passage of days, not justice.

There’s also a meta-poetic wink: Ovid’s work survives because time, the supposed healer, is also the great editor. It erases the immediate scandal and preserves the line. The cure comes with a cost - forgetting - and Ovid, ever the ironist, seems to know that’s the bargain.
