"To me, Sabbath was always JUSt a really heavy blues band. That s all we were. We just took those blues roots and made them heavier"
About this Quote
The intent is partly historical housekeeping. Sabbath didn’t arrive from nowhere in 1970; they cannibalized a vocabulary that already existed in Black American blues - repetition, tension-and-release, the grief-and-gallows humor of working-class music - and then amplified its darkest emotional colors. “Heavier” isn’t only about distortion or downtuning. It’s about weight as mood: dread made rhythmic, anxiety made catchy. By framing it as blues, Butler also quietly claims legitimacy. Metal is often treated as an adolescent mutation; blues is treated as heritage. He’s threading the needle: rebellious sound, traditional lineage.
There’s subtext, too, about class and sincerity. Calling Sabbath “just” a blues band reads like a refusal of pretension, a Birmingham pragmatism that mistrusts grand narratives. It also challenges the sanitized canon that sometimes cordons blues off as museum music while treating metal as an aberration. Butler’s point is that the aberration was never the feeling - only the decibels.
