Art & Creativity Quote by Vladimir Nabokov

"To play safe, I prefer to accept only one type of power: the power of art over trash, the triumph of magic over the brute"

About this Quote

Nabokov’s “to play safe” is the first sly move: he poses as cautious while smuggling in a radical refusal. In an age obsessed with power in its loudest forms - political leverage, ideological persuasion, social authority - he narrows the field to something that can’t easily be legislated or weaponized: aesthetic force. The sentence is built like a gate: only one kind of power gets in, everything else stays outside, downgraded to “trash” and “the brute.”

The subtext is less airy than it sounds. Nabokov lived through revolution, exile, and totalitarian systems that demanded art serve a cause. His dislike of “brute” power isn’t abstract; it’s an immigrant’s knowledge that coercion always wants to recruit language. So he draws a bright line between domination and enchantment. Art’s “magic” isn’t escapism here; it’s a counter-sovereignty. The artist doesn’t command bodies, he reorders attention.

Notice the contempt in the nouns. “Trash” isn’t simply bad taste; it’s the mass-produced, the slogan, the utilitarian sentence pretending to be truth. Calling art’s victory a “triumph” borrows the vocabulary of conquest while denying its typical spoils. That’s Nabokov’s trick: he keeps the drama of power while relocating it to the page, where the stakes are precision, surprise, and freedom from the mob’s simplifications.

It’s also a defensive boast. Nabokov insists that the only authority worth having is the one that makes brute reality briefly unrecognizable - and, by doing so, reveals how crude its usual claims to power really are.
