The intent is diagnostic, not merely scolding. McLuhan is naming a power shift: persuasion has migrated from civic and educational spaces into commercial ones, where language is tested against immediate results. Ad agencies become modern rhetorical laboratories, ruthlessly empirical about attention, emotion, and repetition. That’s the subtext: we didn’t lose eloquence; we industrialized it, optimized it, and aimed it at consumption.

Context matters. Writing in the mid-20th century, McLuhan watched television and advertising fuse image, sound, and text into a new persuasive grammar. “Repositories of models” is a sly phrase: it suggests museums and vaults, places where culture stores its gold. He’s implying the classroom has become archival while advertising is alive, adaptive, and technologically amplified.

There’s also a moral sting. When the most potent public language serves brands, civic speech risks becoming derivative, and citizenship starts borrowing its vocabulary from salesmanship. McLuhan’s line works because it flatters nobody: it’s an insult to academia, a demystification of artistry, and a warning that the loudest eloquence may belong to the highest bidder.
