Tange is pushing back against the romantic fantasy that simply repeating inherited forms counts as invention.

The subtext is postwar Japan, where architecture became a proxy battle over identity. After the rupture of 1945 and the rush of modernization, "traditional" design could easily harden into either nostalgic escapism or nationalist performance. Tange, who fused modernist planning with references to shrines, tatami proportions, and modular order, offers a third stance: tradition as a living archive, not a governing script.
