Science & Tech Quote by David R. Brower

"Understanding how DNA transmits all it knows about cancer, physics, dreaming and love will keep man searching for some time"

About this Quote

Brower gives DNA the swagger of an all-purpose oracle, and the exaggeration is the point. An environmentalist best known for fighting dams and defending wilderness, he’s not doing a biology lecture here; he’s staking a claim about what kind of creature “man” is when he’s at his best: restless, curious, and permanently unfinished. By cramming “cancer, physics, dreaming and love” into one genetic suitcase, he collapses the boundaries we like to police - hard science vs. soft feeling, lab bench vs. bedroom, measurable disease vs. private imagination. The line works because it makes that collapse feel inevitable, even slightly mischievous: if DNA is the transmission system, then everything we flatter ourselves as purely cultural or spiritual is, at least in part, a biological inheritance.

The subtext has a Brower-era edge. Mid-20th-century America loved its technological triumphs and feared their fallout - the same society that could decode nature could also bulldoze it. Brower’s sentence nods to that tension without scolding. “Will keep man searching” is both admiration and warning: the search is endless, and it’s powered by the same intellect that can cure cancer or rationalize wrecking a river.

There’s also a strategic humility embedded in “all it knows.” DNA “knows” a lot, but not everything; the mystery remains. Brower is selling wonder as a renewable resource - a reason to keep looking, and maybe, to tread more carefully while we do.
