Solzhenitsyn wrote against a Soviet apparatus that depended on public fictions - show trials, propaganda, the ritual of pretending - while enforcing those fictions through surveillance and terror. He’s also indicting the citizen’s role: once you accept the lie to stay safe, you become part of the violence’s supply chain. The line works because it refuses comforting separations between “words” and “force.” In his worldview, they’re co-conspirators, and the bill always comes due.
