Life & Wisdom Quote by Neil Innes

"Viv had this kind of stage presence where you couldn't ignore it. He walked onstage, he looked dangerous. You just didn't know what he was going to do?"

About this Quote

Danger, in Neil Innes's telling, isn’t about violence; it’s about volatility. “Viv” (almost certainly Vivian Stanshall, the Bonzo Dog Band’s magnetic ringleader) didn’t project the polished competence of a pro. He projected risk. Innes’s phrasing is doing careful work: “you couldn’t ignore it” isn’t praise for volume or charisma alone, it’s a claim about attention being hijacked. Presence becomes a kind of social gravity. The room stops being neutral because one person has made it feel unstable.

“Looked dangerous” is a brilliant, sideways compliment. Stanshall’s danger was aesthetic: a refusal to behave predictably, to honor the unwritten contract that a performer will reliably deliver “the act.” In a comedy-music context, unpredictability is the drug. You laugh harder when you sense the performer might derail, and you watch closer because derailment could turn into revelation. Innes is pointing at that knife-edge where spontaneity reads as authenticity, even when it’s meticulously cultivated.

The subtext is also about a particular British postwar performance lineage: music hall, art-school absurdism, a punk-adjacent contempt for polish before punk had a name. Stanshall’s “what will he do?” energy prefigures later cult frontmen whose power came from seeming ungovernable. Innes, a writer and musician himself, recognizes the uncomfortable truth: technical talent is optional; commanding uncertainty is not. That’s why the sentence lands like a memory and a warning.
