Politics & Power Quote by Barbara Jordan

"We are a people trying not only to solve the problems of the present: unemployment, inflation... but we are attempting on a larger scale to fulfill the promise of America"

About this Quote

Barbara Jordan frames policy as a moral audition. The list of “unemployment, inflation...” is deliberately plain, almost workmanlike: the anxieties that hit kitchen tables and factory floors. Then she pivots - not away from those problems, but above them - into the phrase that does the real lifting: “fulfill the promise of America.” It’s a move that refuses the usual tradeoff in political speech between the urgent and the aspirational. Jordan insists they’re the same project.

The subtext is a rebuke to small politics. By calling Americans “a people trying,” she leans on a civic “we” that’s aspirational rather than descriptive: unity as an obligation, not a fact. The ellipsis after “inflation” hints that the problems are endless, almost interchangeable, while “the promise” is singular and stabilizing. She’s telling listeners: yes, the day-to-day fires matter, but they’re symptoms of whether the country is keeping its word.

Context matters because Jordan’s authority came from contradiction: a Black woman from Texas speaking as a constitutional patriot during an era of economic turbulence and post-Watergate distrust. Her rhetoric doesn’t beg for inclusion; it claims ownership. “America” isn’t an abstract ideal in her mouth - it’s a contract, and she speaks like someone entitled to enforce it. The intent is to widen the frame so that economic fixes become tests of national character: not just whether we can manage a crisis, but whether the nation can be worthy of itself.
