Daily Inspiration Quote by Christopher Lasch

"We are all revolutionaries now, addicts of change"

About this Quote

Lasch’s line lands like a dare: if everyone is a revolutionary, then revolution has stopped being a politics and become a habit. The bite is in the pivot from the noble to the pathological. “Revolutionaries” carries the glamour of risk, solidarity, and moral urgency; “addicts of change” drains that glamour into compulsion, restlessness, and dependency. He’s not celebrating a society finally awakened. He’s diagnosing one that can’t sit still long enough to build anything durable.

The intent is to puncture late-20th-century self-congratulation about “progress.” In Lasch’s orbit - especially in a culture of consumer choice, therapeutic self-fashioning, and perpetual innovation - change becomes less a means to justice than a lifestyle. That’s the subtext: modern institutions sell novelty as freedom, and we start to confuse motion with meaning. The revolutionary, once defined by commitment to a concrete program and collective sacrifice, is replaced by a personality type: suspicious of limits, allergic to tradition, hungry for the next reboot.

Context matters. Writing in the shadow of the ’60s and the long hangover that followed, Lasch watched radical rhetoric migrate into advertising, management speak, and personal branding. By the time “revolution” is everywhere, it risks becoming nowhere - a floating signifier that flatters the individual while leaving structures intact. The sentence works because it indicts both sides at once: the right’s market-driven churn and the left’s romance with permanent disruption. Lasch’s real target is the cultural economy that turns dissent into a consumable mood, then calls the withdrawal symptoms “liberation.”
