"We are in a position of financial and social power, and we could be agents of change in our society. Without pretension, I believe we could be a nice little gardener who takes care of the garden, and hopefully our neighbor will do the same. Then, maybe we'll achieve a better world"
About this Quote
The intent is partly moral, partly reputational. As Cirque du Soleil`s co-founder, he comes from a brand of spectacle that sells wonder while benefiting from the very economic structures that make wonder affordable to some and distant to others. When he says "without pretension", he`s anticipating the eye-roll: the affluent announcing their humility is its own form of performance. So he insists on smallness ("nice little gardener") to make the claim palatable.
The subtext is incrementalism with an escape hatch. He doesn`t talk about regulation, labor power, or redistribution; he talks about neighbors modeling good behavior. That neighborly chain reaction is comforting because it suggests change can be achieved without confrontation. The garden is society, but also a gated version of society: problems become weeds, solvable through care rather than politics.
Context matters: this is the post-2000s era where elites are expected to pair success with "impact". Laliberte`s line fits the philanthro-capitalist mood, offering an ethic of responsibility that sounds intimate and non-ideological. Its rhetorical strength is also its limit: it makes systemic conflict feel like bad landscaping, not a fight over who gets the land.
