Daily Inspiration Quote by George Weinberg

"We each have a personal myth, a vision of who we really are and what we want. Health means that part of what you want is to give to others"

About this Quote

Weinberg slips a quietly radical idea into the warm packaging of self-knowledge: the self isn’t a fixed “truth” you discover, it’s a story you keep authoring. Calling it a “personal myth” does two things at once. It legitimizes the way people need narrative to function - coherence, meaning, a main character arc - while also hinting at distortion. Myths edit, exaggerate, leave out inconvenient chapters. The subtext is clinical: many of our symptoms, conflicts, and compulsions are attempts to protect a fragile plotline about who we are supposed to be.

Then he tightens the screw: “Health” isn’t purity of desire, or perfect self-actualization, or even inner peace. It’s an orientation. “Part of what you want is to give to others” reframes generosity as diagnostic, not decorative. If your wants are entirely self-referential, you’re not just selfish; you’re stuck, trapped in a myth where other people are props, threats, or mirrors. Mental health, in this view, is the capacity to treat others as real - with needs that can place demands on your story.

Context matters. Weinberg, who coined “homophobia” and spent a career pushing psychology away from pathologizing gay people, is speaking against models of wellness built on conformity and self-policing. He’s arguing for a sturdier self: one that can afford empathy because it’s not constantly defending its legitimacy. The line isn’t sentimental. It’s pragmatic. Giving becomes evidence that the personal myth has matured from survival narrative into shared life.
