Daily Inspiration Quote by Burt Ward

"We found that just by the way we stood, affected women dramatically, and if you look at our show, you'll see that we always stood with our legs open our fists on hips and our bat bulges forward, which had a profound effect on women!"

About this Quote

Ward’s candor lands like a time capsule from pop culture’s most joyfully unselfconscious era: camp TV dressed up as sexuality, then pretending it didn’t know what it was doing. On its face, he’s describing blocking and posture. Underneath, he’s admitting that a “family” show built part of its appeal on a barely disguised erotic cue: the superhero stance as billboard.

The specifics matter. “Legs open,” “fists on hips,” “bulges forward” aren’t neutral acting choices; they’re a choreography of dominance and availability, the same visual grammar advertising uses to sell everything from cologne to cars. Ward frames it as accidental power - “just by the way we stood” - which conveniently absolves intent while still bragging about effect. That blend of innocence and swagger is the subtext: we weren’t being raunchy, we were being heroic... and it worked.

Context does the rest. Batman in the ’60s was a pop-art fever dream, filtered through network standards that couldn’t show much but could imply plenty. So the body became the punchline and the hook at once. Ward’s line also exposes a pre-feminist media logic: women appear here not as viewers with tastes, but as a reactive audience to be “affected,” as if desire is a special effect triggered by framing.

It’s funny, but not harmless. The quote accidentally diagnoses how television learned to smuggle sex through spectacle: the costume, the pose, the wink, all doing the work the script couldn’t say out loud.
