"We have pledged ourselves, and of this the United Nations of the world are witness, to give the fullest opportunity for attainment of self-government by India as soon as hostilities are over. I repeat that that is beyond doubt"
About this Quote
The invocation of “the United Nations of the world” is shrewd wartime theater. In 1942, with Japan advancing and Britain desperate for Indian support, Cripps needed legitimacy beyond Westminster. Casting the pledge as something the world can “witness” turns a domestic colonial bargain into a stage-managed performance for allies, especially the US, where anti-colonial sentiment was a growing pressure point. It’s also an early hint of the postwar order: empires would increasingly have to justify themselves in public, not just in force.
Then comes the trapdoor: “as soon as hostilities are over.” That clause postpones the future into a foggy, elastic timeline defined by Britain’s war, not India’s political urgency. The emphatic “I repeat… beyond doubt” tries to drown out the obvious doubt: colonial promises had a long history of evaporating after the emergency passed. Cripps is selling certainty to a nationalist movement that had learned, painfully, to distrust certainties offered by the Empire.
