Context matters. Slovo was a senior figure in the South African liberation struggle, where the state’s violence was systematic and the opposition faced pressure to match force with force. The line reads like an internal brief for militants and an external message to supporters: discipline the movement by framing lethal action as reluctant duty, while also legitimizing it as responsive to popular anger. It’s the language of a leader trying to keep control of an insurgent moral economy: acknowledging rage, channeling it, and pre-emptively defending the consequences.
