Politics & Power Quote by Herb Brooks

"We should be dreaming. We grew up as kids having dreams, but now we're too sophisticated as adults, as a nation. We stopped dreaming. We should always have dreams"

About this Quote

Brooks is poking at a very American pathology: the way adulthood gets mistaken for surrender. Coming from the coach who engineered the 1980 "Miracle on Ice", the line isn’t a Hallmark plea for positive thinking; it’s a critique of complacency disguised as maturity. “Too sophisticated” is a deliberately barbed phrase. It suggests a nation that has traded imagination for irony, ambition for the comfort of knowing better, and risk for the status of being “realistic.” In sports, that kind of sophistication is often just fear with a good vocabulary.

The genius of the quote is how it scales from locker room to civic life without changing its stakes. Brooks frames dreaming as a discipline, not a mood. Kids dream because they haven’t learned the social penalties of wanting something out loud. Adults, and especially “as a nation,” learn to pre-empt disappointment by shrinking their goals. That’s what he’s calling out: the protective cynicism that passes for wisdom.

In context, Brooks’s entire coaching mythos is a rebuttal to inevitability. The Soviet team represented inevitability: system, dominance, the cold confidence of the unbeatable. Brooks’s Americans were built on an unfashionable idea in late-70s U.S. culture: that belief plus work could still embarrass power. His “we” isn’t sentimental; it’s a demand for collective aspiration when the culture is tempted to settle for competent decline.
