Leadership Quote by Sarah Palin

"We tend to prefer candidates that don't talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco"

About this Quote

Palin’s line is a drive-by indictment of “two Americas” politics, packaged in the language of plainspoken fairness. Scranton stands in for industrial, working-class normalcy; San Francisco is shorthand for coastal affluence, cultural liberalism, and a donor class that supposedly needs a different sales pitch. The sentence is doing class and culture warfare with zip codes, not policy.

The intent is less to praise consistency than to accuse elites of code-switching: telling blue-collar voters they’re respected while signaling to urban professionals that those same voters are backward, expendable, or merely strategic. “Talk about us” is the key tell. It frames the electorate as a community being narrated from above, a people who are discussed rather than listened to. Palin positions herself as the translator and protector of that “us,” converting resentment into a moral standard: authenticity.

The subtext is sharper: this isn’t just about hypocrisy, it’s about betrayal. By implying candidates change their story depending on the room, she paints opponents as managerial and performative - people for whom identity is a marketing segment. The line also pre-empts criticism of her own bluntness. If you’re offended, the logic goes, maybe you’re the San Francisco audience she’s exposing.

Contextually, it lands in an era when Democrats were trying to stitch together a coalition spanning union towns and coastal cities. Palin turns that coalition into a liability: a party so broad it must speak in doubles. The brilliance is how quickly it converts geography into trust and trust into a vote.
