Life & Wisdom Quote by Olive Schreiner

"We were equals once when we lay new-born babes on our nurse's knees. We will be equal again when they tie up our jaws for the last sleep"

About this Quote

Schreiner yanks equality out of parliament and philosophy and pins it to the body, where argument can’t squirm away. Her image is almost indecently intimate: newborns on a nurse’s knees, mouths later cinched shut for burial. Two scenes of enforced helplessness bracket a life in which society works overtime to manufacture hierarchy. The line’s sting is that it grants equality only at the moments when we have no agency to contest inequality.

The specific intent is political, but she avoids slogans. By choosing birth and death, Schreiner implies that status is an accretion, not a truth. Class, gender, empire, race: the whole Victorian apparatus of “natural” superiority is exposed as costume jewelry you’re dressed in between two naked facts. The nurse is a quiet provocation, too. Equality arrives not in the heroic masculine arenas of law and war but in feminized spaces of care and domestic labor, where Schreiner’s South African and British readers would have seen both tenderness and power.

“Jaws” matters. It’s not just mortality; it’s speech being physically closed. Subtext: the equalizing forces aren’t benevolent. Death levels, yes, but it also silences. For a writer who fought against patriarchal constraint and colonial violence, that last image reads like a warning: societies that refuse equality in life will get it only in the grave, and by then it’s the cheapest kind. The sentence works because it flatters no one’s virtue; it indicts the living with the cold logic of anatomy.
