"We're a rock group. we're noisy, rowdy, sensational and weird"
About this Quote
The specific intent is branding without the corporate sheen. AC/DC’s whole aesthetic has long been a rebuke to rock’s periodic midlife crises - the moments when the genre starts auditioning for legitimacy through concept albums, virtuoso seriousness, or political grandstanding. Young’s list celebrates the traits often used to dismiss hard rock as crude. By naming them proudly, he flips insult into identity: yes, we’re loud; yes, we’re vulgar; that’s the point.
The subtext is class-coded, too. “Rowdy” and “noisy” signal a working-class nightlife: pubs, sweat, bodies packed together, music as release rather than lecture. “Sensational” nods to spectacle - the schoolboy uniform, the duckwalk, the winking theatricality - while “weird” keeps the door open for the band’s cartoonish extremity without asking permission from tastemakers.
Context matters: coming out of the ’70s, AC/DC were constantly compared to more “serious” contemporaries. Young’s line draws a hard border around what they do best: adrenaline, volume, and the honest pleasure of being a little too much.
