That “most” is doing cultural work: it implies a society that has built whole reward structures around accumulation, then acts shocked when people keep accumulating. The aphorism also performs a quiet reversal of the usual coming-of-age narrative. We’re told we lose innocence and become realistic; Khamarov suggests we lose courage and trust but keep appetite. It’s bleak, but it lands because it feels observable: the older we get, the more we learn to hedge, bargain, hoard. The line’s sting is that it doesn’t blame “humanity” in the abstract; it indicts the adult world we’ve constructed and then call natural.
