Nature & Animals Quote by Barbara Kingsolver

"We're animals. We're born like every other mammal and we live our whole lives around disguised animal thoughts"

About this Quote

Kingsolver punctures the polite fiction that humans are mostly mind. By opening with the blunt, leveling "We're animals", she yanks us out of the comforting hierarchy where intellect floats above appetite, fear, sex, status, and tribe. The line works because it sounds like biology but lands like moral critique: if we are mammals, then our daily performances of civility are less a triumph over nature than a costume draped over it.

The sharpest word here is "disguised". Kingsolver isn't arguing that we're ruled by raw instinct in some cartoonish way; she's pointing to the sophistication of the cover story. Modern life becomes an elaborate camouflage system: corporate ambition framed as "career growth", jealousy recast as "boundaries", consumption marketed as "self-care", violence sanitized into policy, war, or "security". The subtext is that our highest narratives often function as plausible deniability, letting us keep acting on animal drives while believing we're above them.

As a novelist, Kingsolver is also defending fiction's jurisdiction. If human beings are driven by impulses we won't admit, the novel is one of the few forms that can show the real engine under the hood: the contradictions between what characters say and what they want. The context across her work - ecology, community, bodily consequence - suggests a corrective to American exceptionalism and disembodied progress talk. It's not misanthropy; it's accountability. You can't negotiate with your nature until you stop pretending it's not there.
