"We're going to have the same demographic spread of nutcases and the same spread of everybody in between"
About this Quote
The phrase “demographic spread” borrows the cool language of statistics and sociology, then slams it into an insult. That mismatch is the joke and the critique. We love to talk about humans like datasets - segments, distributions, bell curves - until the dataset starts emailing you at 3 a.m. Then it becomes personal. Cannon uses the language of population management to underline how little management actually manages.
Subtextually, it’s also a warning against scapegoating. If every group has the same spectrum, then “the problem” can’t be pinned on outsiders or a single class of villain; it’s structural, endemic, baked into any sufficiently large crowd. For an artist, that’s context-rich: art communities thrive on eccentricity but are also vulnerable to turning eccentricity into dysfunction. Cannon’s sentence is a hard boundary disguised as a casual observation: expect the full range, plan accordingly, don’t romanticize the mess.
