Life & Wisdom Quote by Oliver Herford

"What is my loftiest ambition? I've always wanted to throw an egg at an electric fan"

About this Quote

Aspirations are supposed to arrive dressed for a keynote: legacy, purpose, maybe a tasteful martyrdom. Herford shows up with breakfast and a household appliance. The “loftiest ambition” line is a bait-and-switch that punctures the Victorian-Edwardian cult of uplift and self-improvement, the era’s insistence that every desire must be morally stamped and future-facing. Then he replaces the expected monument with a splatter.

The joke works because it’s not only childish; it’s precisely, almost scientifically childish. An egg plus an electric fan is an experiment in spectacle: instant mess, centrifugal poetry, a small domestic apocalypse powered by modernity. Herford’s ambition isn’t to build the machine or master it, but to sabotage it for the aesthetic of disorder. That’s the subtextual jab at the new techno-fetishism of his time, when electricity was still magical enough to inspire sermons about progress. He demystifies it by imagining the most lowbrow interaction possible.

There’s also a sly defense of useless wanting. By calling this prank his “loftiest” aim, Herford refuses the premise that ambition has to be productive to be legitimate. It’s a comic manifesto for impulse, curiosity, and the private thrill of watching systems misbehave. The line lands because it admits what polite culture often edits out: sometimes the most honest dream is not achievement, but mischief with consequences you can clean up.
