A tiny, non-charismatic beneficiary, not “the public” or “future generations.” It’s a jab at anthropocentrism, but also at the conservation rhetoric that sells wilderness by translating it into human benefit. Abbey flips the script: the sequoia doesn’t exist for us; if anything, we’re incidental to its canopy.

Context matters: Abbey wrote as a prickly desert environmentalist during the postwar boom, when dams, roads, and logging were marketed as progress and wilderness as “unused.” His comic teleology is a moral wedge. The sequoia’s “purpose” becomes a rebuke to scale-obsessed development and a reminder that grandeur in nature isn’t obliged to serve our narratives. It can simply cast shade on something small and alive, and that’s enough.
