Daily Inspiration Quote by Hayao Miyazaki

"When a man is shooting a handgun, it's just like he is shooting because that's his job, and he has no other choice. It's no good. When a girl is shooting a handgun, it's really something"

About this Quote

Miyazaki is poking at a cinematic reflex so old it barely registers: the “man with a gun” as default grammar. A male character firing a handgun reads as occupational noise - cop, soldier, gangster, lone avenger - a role preloaded with permission and inevitability. “That’s his job” is the tell. Masculine violence arrives already justified by narrative bureaucracy. He “has no other choice” because the genre has decided he doesn’t. Miyazaki’s curt verdict, “It’s no good,” isn’t moral panic as much as aesthetic disdain: a complaint about lazy storytelling that confuses inevitability with depth.

Then he flips the camera. “When a girl is shooting… it’s really something” sounds, at first blush, like novelty hunting. But the subtext is less “girls are special” than “the frame cracks.” A girl with a handgun can’t rely on the same automatic alibis. The audience has to ask: Why is she here? Who put the gun in her hand? What social rules is she breaking, what cost is she paying, what contradiction is she living? The act becomes legible as character, not just function.

Context matters: Miyazaki’s films routinely distrust glamorized violence and distrust the idea that power equals righteousness. Even when his heroines are brave, they’re rarely “action” in the Hollywood sense; their agency is moral, relational, ecological. He’s identifying how gendered expectations can expose the machinery of the medium: when the default breaks, story has to earn its violence - or confront that it can’t.
