“I guess it was part of my experience” lands as both humility and hedge. The “I guess” softens authorship, as if to say the film is less claim than consequence. But it also admits the central tension of socially charged cinema: turning collective catastrophe into “my experience” is exactly where art risks becoming appropriation. Bigelow’s intent reads as justification, but the subtext is awareness that justification will be demanded.
