Life & Wisdom Quote by W. H. Auden

"When I am in the company of scientists, I feel like a shabby curate who has strayed by mistake into a drawing room full of dukes"

About this Quote

Auden’s self-portrait lands with a deliberately lopsided politeness: a “shabby curate” wandering into a salon of “dukes.” It’s funny because it borrows the old British class system to describe a newer hierarchy - expertise - and then pretends he’s merely being modest about it. The joke depends on anachronism. Scientists aren’t literally aristocrats, and Auden isn’t literally clergy, but the social feeling is real: the sudden awareness of being underdressed for the occasion, of speaking the wrong dialect in the wrong room.

The specific intent is less self-abasement than calibration. Auden was a poet with a lifelong fascination with psychology, biology, and the hard-edged authority of empiricism. Put him near scientists and he senses the gravitational pull of their methods: testable claims, quantifiable results, fewer indulgences for metaphysical flourish. The “curate” detail matters; clergy are trained in interpretation, consolation, the management of meaning. In a scientific “drawing room,” that skillset can read as ornamental - respectable, even useful, but not sovereign.

Subtext: Auden is diagnosing a 20th-century status shift. After world wars and technological acceleration, cultural prestige tilts toward the laboratory. Poetry, once a public authority, becomes a slightly embarrassed visitor. Yet he doesn’t sneer at science; he stages himself as the one who misread the invitation. The line flatters scientists while quietly defending the poet’s role: the curate may be shabby, but he still knows how to speak to souls, not just systems.
