"When I first came to the United States in 1956, I fell in love with things - mainly the vitality and the freedoms"
About this Quote
The timing matters. 1956 is postwar Britain still ration-scarred in memory, still class-stiff, still managing imperial hangover. America, by contrast, is booming, confident, loud with opportunity. Evans’ “vitality” reads as tempo: the sense that life moves faster, that institutions don’t merely preserve tradition but generate momentum. And then “freedoms” - plural, notably - signals an English outsider clocking a whole ecosystem: speech that bites, press that fights, mobility that feels less permission-based. Coming from a British press culture with its own constraints, he’s naming a lived difference in how power is challenged.
There’s subtext, too, in what he doesn’t mention. 1956 America is also McCarthy’s aftertaste, segregation’s daily reality, Cold War paranoia humming under the prosperity. Evans’ phrasing suggests he’s aware of complication but choosing to foreground what pulled him in: the animating myth of a society that argues in public and treats reinvention as normal. It’s a sentence built like reportage: one man’s first impression, filed with admiration and a reporter’s reserved precision.
