"When I think of the library of Alexandria and of the fact that, although it burnt down, people continue to sort the letters of the alphabet according to that tradition, then that makes certain expressions of modernity, even of interventions on the textual level, possible"
About this Quote
The subtext is a director’s subtext. Kluge isn’t mourning books so much as tracking what remains after destruction: formats, sequences, rules of assembly. In cinema, you can burn the archive and still keep editing grammar; you can shatter narratives and still rely on the viewer’s learned ability to sort fragments into meaning. His phrase “interventions on the textual level” sounds academic, but it’s basically a manifesto for montage and for remix culture before the word “remix” got trendy. You can cut, splice, and recontextualize because an older order - alphabetic, archival, bureaucratic - is still silently organizing perception.
Context matters: Kluge comes out of postwar German culture and New German Cinema, suspicious of grand narratives and official memory. Alexandria stands in for cultural trauma, but also for the fantasy that catastrophe ends history. His point is harsher and more hopeful: the machinery of sense-making endures, and that endurance is precisely what gives artists permission to be radical. The past doesn’t just haunt the present; it supplies the tools to disrupt it.
