"When the human mind exists in the light of reason and no more than reason, we may say with absolute certainty that Man and all that made him will be in that instant gone"
About this Quote
The subtext is anthropological as much as philosophical. Eiseley, trained as a scientist and steeped in human origins, knew that “Man” is not just a biological organism but a creature stitched together from myth, metaphor, memory, fear, appetite, grief. Strip the mind down to pure calculus and you don’t get a better human; you get a different species entirely, one that can no longer generate the stories, moral intuitions, and imaginative leaps that made humans adaptive in the first place. “All that made him” gestures to evolution and culture at once: toolmaking and tenderness, violence and ritual, mathematics and music.
Context matters here: mid-century American science was intoxicated with systems, measurement, and mastery, from behaviorism to the early glow of cybernetics. Eiseley pushes back from inside the tent. His “absolute certainty” is pointedly ironic; he uses the language of scientific confidence to argue for the parts of experience that resist being treated as data. Reason is indispensable. As a totalizing ideology, it becomes a kind of self-erasing light.
