Faith & Spirit Quote by Hans Hofmann

"When the impulses which stir us to profound emotion are integrated with the medium of expression, every interview of the soul may become art. This is contingent upon mastery of the medium"

About this Quote

Hofmann is smuggling a hard-nosed discipline manifesto inside what sounds like a romantic defense of feeling. “Impulses” and “profound emotion” are the bait: he grants the modern hunger for authenticity, the idea that art begins in the gut. Then he turns the screw. Emotion alone doesn’t qualify; it has to be “integrated with the medium of expression.” That verb matters. Integration implies friction, translation, compromise - the messy work of turning raw sensation into decisions about color, edge, spatial tension, weight. For Hofmann, the soul doesn’t get to speak in pure form. It has to learn the language.

The sly subtext is anti-bohemian: every “interview of the soul” can become art, but only under a condition that most people want to skip. “Contingent upon mastery of the medium” is the gatekeeper clause, the part that refuses the comforting myth that sincerity is enough. He’s drawing a line between confession and craft, between emoting and making.

Context sharpens the point. Hofmann, a central teacher-figure for Abstract Expressionism, worked in a moment when painters were loudly insisting on the primacy of inner life. His rejoinder doesn’t reject that project; it professionalizes it. Even the phrase “medium of expression” broadens beyond paint: any form (canvas, language, movement) has constraints, and constraints are where meaning gets engineered. He’s arguing that the real miracle isn’t having feelings - it’s building a structure capable of carrying them without collapsing into sentiment or chaos.
