"While theoretically and technically television may be feasible, commercially and financially it is an impossibility"
About this Quote
The subtext is less about television’s image quality than about the brutal economics of new media. For TV to matter, it needed more than screens: standards, transmitters, manufacturing capacity, content pipelines, and a public willing to rearrange leisure time around a glowing box. De Forest is really talking about coordination problems. Radio succeeded because it slid into existing habits (listening) and could scale with comparatively cheap receivers. Television demanded higher bandwidth, tighter technical tolerances, and a whole new genre grammar. “Commercially and financially” is doing heavy lifting: not just whether it can be sold, but whether it can sustain an industry.
There’s also a defensive edge. Inventors are supposed to see the future; admitting a breakthrough is “impossible” in the only currency that matters (capital) smuggles caution into a culture intoxicated by invention. History makes the quote look wrong, but it’s right about the pattern: technology doesn’t become a medium until money, institutions, and desire agree to pretend the impossible is inevitable.
