"Why are we so full of restraint? Why do we not give in all directions? Is it fear of losing ourselves? Until we do lose ourselves there is no hope of finding ourselves"
About this Quote
The subtext is that “the self” we’re protecting is already a fabrication, a socially acceptable draft. Fear of “losing ourselves” reads like fear of losing status, legibility, and the comforting story we tell about who we are. Miller’s twist is that the loss is not a catastrophe but a prerequisite: you can’t “find” a self you’ve never actually tested. The sentence turns the usual self-help arc inside out. Instead of “discover your authentic self,” it’s: dismantle the false one, tolerate the vacancy, then see what survives.
Context matters. Miller wrote out of early-20th-century repression and propriety, and his work (especially Tropic of Cancer) made a career of violating literary, sexual, and moral decorum. This line carries that same anti-bourgeois animus: restraint isn’t virtue, it’s obedience mistaken for identity. He’s selling a risky freedom, yes, but also a method: surrender as experiment. Not self-destruction for its own sake, but selfhood as something you earn by letting the old version of you burn.
