Time & Perspective Quote by Aldous Huxley

"Words, words, words! They shut one off from the universe. Three quarters of the time one's never in contact with things, only with the beastly words that stand for them"

About this Quote

Huxley’s impatience here isn’t with language as such, but with the way language becomes a kind of padded room: comfortable, upholstered, and quietly airtight. “Words, words, words!” is a theatrical tantrum (he’s borrowing Hamlet’s weary shrug) that doubles as diagnosis. The repetition mimics the very overload he’s condemning: language multiplying until it drowns the thing it’s meant to name. The phrase “shut one off from the universe” flips a comforting idea on its head. Words are supposed to connect us - to share experience, coordinate reality - but Huxley insists they often function like blinds pulled against daylight.

The subtext is modernity’s problem: mediated life. In a culture thick with slogans, labels, advertisements, and pseudo-scientific terms, you can spend your whole day in contact with descriptions rather than the described. Calling words “beastly” is doing extra work. It’s not just that they’re inadequate; they’re unruly, invasive, and capable of breeding misconceptions. They “stand for” things the way a cardboard cutout stands for a person: recognizable at a glance, useless for intimacy.

Context matters: Huxley lived through an era when mass media, propaganda, and technocratic language were professionalizing illusion. Across his work, the fear isn’t silence; it’s substitution - the moment vocabulary becomes a ready-made worldview. The intent, then, is not anti-intellectualism but anti-automatic living: a demand to recover direct perception before the mind files experience into pre-approved categories.
