In jazz culture, the myth of genius often centers the lone virtuoso, the sealed-off masterpiece, the audience as passive consumer. Shepp flips that hierarchy. In Negro music, he argues, the listener is an instrument.

The phrase “so important” isn’t polite appreciation; it’s a claim about authorship. Call and response isn’t just a technique you can notate on staff paper. It’s a social contract built in real time, a feedback loop where shouts, claps, murmurs, silence, and energy shape phrasing, tempo, risk. The “response” can be literal (church, work songs) or modernized (a club crowd pushing a band to stretch). Either way, it insists that Black music emerges from community conditions, not merely individual expression.

There’s also politics tucked into the vocabulary. Shepp, a key voice in the 1960s-70s avant-garde and Black Arts era, is resisting the institutional framing that treats jazz as refined museum art, detached from Black life. By foregrounding “Negro music” and audience participation, he’s reclaiming lineage: spirituals, blues, sanctified church, street corner harmonies, all traditions where performance is conversation and survival strategy.
