Daily Inspiration Quote by Johannes Tauler

"You have within you many strong and cruel enemies to overcome. You must know that there are still a thousand ties which you must break. No one can tell you what they are; only you can tell by looking at yourself and into your heart"

About this Quote

Tauler frames the spiritual life like an internal insurgency: the real opposition isn’t “out there,” it’s already housed inside you, strong, organized, and sometimes brutal. Calling these forces “enemies” sharpens the stakes. This isn’t self-improvement as lifestyle tweak; it’s combat against habits of mind that feel natural precisely because they’re intimate. The cruelty lands hardest because it’s familiar: self-justifying anger, vanity that masquerades as virtue, appetites that claim to be needs.

The “thousand ties” is Tauler at his most psychologically astute. He refuses the comforting fiction of one decisive breakthrough. Instead, he sketches attachment as a dense network: status, comfort, resentment, the need to be right, even the pride of being spiritual. The number is less arithmetic than atmospheric, meant to make holiness feel like unglamorous, repetitive disentangling.

Then comes the sting in the pastoral tone: “No one can tell you what they are.” Tauler is a medieval Dominican, steeped in the Rhineland mystic tradition, wary of externalized religion that hides behind rule-following. The subtext is a critique of outsourcing conscience to authorities, techniques, or public piety. A confessor can guide, a community can steady you, but the decisive diagnosis is private work: looking “into your heart,” where rationalizations live.

Historically, this reads as the interior turn of late medieval devotion, before the Reformation but already suspicious of spiritual shortcuts. Tauler’s intent is to force accountability without nihilism: if the enemies are within, so is the capacity to face them.
