"You know honestly I think there's a Dracula, a Wolf Man, and a Frankenstein's Monster in all of us. They are sides of our own character so that's why I think we can relate to them in terms of a 'I know how that feels' kind of thing"
About this Quote
The intent isn’t to elevate horror into philosophy so much as to defend why these characters still land. Roxburgh is basically arguing for empathy as the special effect. We don’t keep rebooting these creatures because we’re obsessed with capes and fangs; we keep rebooting them because they offer a safe, stylized way to admit things we don’t like to say plainly: I can be predatory. I can lose control. I can feel made, not born, and still be blamed for it.
The casual phrasing (“you know honestly,” “kind of thing”) matters. It’s an actor talking from the inside of performance: monsters work when they’re playable as emotions, not just prosthetics. His subtext is also a quiet rebuttal to moralizing readings of horror. The point isn’t that the monster is “other.” The point is that the monster is familiar enough to recognize, then distant enough to confess.
