Leadership Quote by Leon Trotsky

"You may not be interested in strategy, but strategy is interested in you"

About this Quote

Strategy is the rude knock at the door that refuses to take a hint. Trotsky’s line works because it flips the usual fantasy of political innocence on its head: you can opt out of chess, but the board doesn’t stop being set. Coming from a revolutionary who spent his life organizing power, fleeing power, and finally being murdered by power, it’s less a clever aphorism than a warning stamped with historical urgency.

The intent is disciplinary. Trotsky is talking to comrades, skeptics, and fence-sitters alike: your personal disinterest won’t protect you from the consequences of organized action. “Strategy” here isn’t abstract planning; it’s the cold reality that other people - parties, states, generals, bosses, counterrevolutionaries - are making plans that will land on your body, your job, your neighborhood. The subtext is a critique of naïveté masquerading as virtue. Pretending to be “above politics” is, in Trotsky’s world, a luxury granted by temporary safety and sustained by someone else’s risk.

Context sharpens the edge. Trotsky lived through the collapse of an empire, civil war, factional purges, exile, and Stalin’s tightening grip on the Soviet project he helped build. In that environment, being unserious about strategy wasn’t just a personality type; it was a survival error. The line also doubles as self-justification: revolutionaries are often accused of being obsessed with tactics and power games, and Trotsky answers, essentially, that history is already playing power games with you. The joke is that it’s not really a joke. It’s an ultimatum dressed as common sense.
