Creativity Quote by David Lee Roth

"You stick your head above the crowd and attract attention and sometimes somebody will throw a rock at you. That's the territory. You buy the land, you get the Indians"

About this Quote

Celebrity, in David Lee Roth's telling, isn't a crown so much as a lightning rod. The first sentence is pure showbiz physics: visibility creates impact. "Stick your head above the crowd" is both ambition and vulnerability - the performer rising into view, the individual daring to be singular. The rock is literal heckling and metaphorical backlash: critics, gatekeepers, jealous peers, tabloids, the anonymous stranger who resents your audacity. Roth makes it sound casual because, in his world, it is.

Then he lands the line that reveals the era and the personality behind it: "That's the territory". It's a frontier metaphor, pitched in the blunt language of someone who lived through arena-rock's boom and the cultural hangover that followed. There's no plea for sympathy, no moral bargaining. It's transactional: attention is the product, hostility is part of the overhead.

"You buy the land, you get the Indians" is the roughest part - a worn, outdated proverb that turns historical violence into a shrug, which is exactly why it stings. Roth isn't endorsing conquest so much as borrowing its swagger: the fantasy that success is expansion and resistance is just a natural hazard. The subtext is permission-giving. If you're going to chase the spotlight, don't act surprised when the spotlight attracts thrown objects.

Spoken by a musician built on bravado, it doubles as self-defense and recruitment slogan: grow a thicker skin, or stay in the crowd.
