“Serves them right” is the tiny, cruel punchline that turns the whole thing into social commentary. It anthropomorphizes those new cells as needy strivers who failed to network properly. Context matters: Coupland comes out of late-20th-century North American consumer culture, writing in the shadow of Gen X irony, where sincerity feels like a sales pitch and the self is crowded with media detritus. Here, even neurogenesis becomes a parable about cultural production. New ideas, new people, new identities: survive by latching onto strong memories, or vanish. And we tell ourselves they had it coming.
