Through his beauty and whimsical life, he discreetly steers Jenny away from her Oxford dreams, proposing a various education of what life could offer beyond the books. Carey Mulligan provides an essential performance as Jenny, capturing the character's shift from naïve interest to the chaos of agonizing realizations.

Jenny's moms and dads, played by Alfred Molina and Cara Seymour, are tentatively encouraging of David, blinded by his appeal and the possibility of a possibly comfy life for their daughter. They ignorantly ignore the worrying age distinction and the too-good-to-be-true pledges made by David.
