The film is based upon the book 'While I'm Dead ... Feed the Dog' by Ric Browde.

Plot Summary
The film revolves mostly around the life of the protagonist 16-year-old Rick Stevens (Nat Wolff), a teen with a troubled and problematic life. The plot follows Rick's ruthless pursuit of the girl of his dreams, Nina Pennington (Selena Gomez).

In spite of the lots of troubles present in both their lives, the movie begins with Rick making a bet with a mobster's kid that he could hook up with Nina. In the middle of this main plot line, Rick is also facing other remarkable adversities including his alcoholic, sex-addict mother (Elisabeth Shue) and his friend Billy's sexually aggressive mommy (Mary-Louise Parker), who ends up being obsessed with him. His daddy (Dylan McDermott) is a two-timing lawyer whose misdeeds continually land his boy in unpleasant circumstances.
