Books of Blood Poster

A journey into uncharted and forbidden territory through three tales tangled in space and time.

Introduction
The 2020 film "Books of Blood" is a horror anthology film that looks into uncharted and prohibited territory through three tales tangled in space and time. The film, directed by Brannon Braga and produced by Seth MacFarlane, is based upon a short story from Clive Barker's "Books of Blood". The plot links various yet interconnected stories together in a somewhat non-linear fashion.

Plot
The film opens with the story of Jenna, a girl struggling with misophonia - a severe disruption caused by specific types of noise. She leaves her professional and familial problems into a small-town bed-and-breakfast run by a kindly couple who have numerous tricks of their own. The second story includes a professional skeptic, Professor Mary Florescu, who works with a psychic to investigate a haunted house. She loses her peace of mind when she realizes that the psychic has actually fooled her.

Finally, the 3rd narrative presents us to Bennett, an expert bad person who is employed to discover the legendary "Book of Blood", an actual book made out of the flesh of a storytelling ghost named Simon McNeal, who scrawls tales of horror onto his own body. When Bennett kidnaps Simon to draw out the book, their encounter takes a blood-curdling turn as horrifying consequences follow.

Performance & Scene
The performances in the movie are strong, especially from Britt Robertson, the actress who plays Jenna, and Freda Foh Shen who plays the apparently sweet landlady with an ominous secret. There isn't a clear protagonist or bad guy, rather it's about the characters and their interaction with the supernatural.

In regards to scenes, it delivers some truly gruesome visuals. Particularly remarkable is the climactic series involving Bennett and his doomed crew who come across Simon. The tension and horror escalates to a truly visceral and memorable climax.

Themes
The anthology's overarching style appears to be the exploration of taboo and scary originating from within. From Jenna's worries manifesting into truth, to the relatively sweet innkeepers developing into brutal killers, each story handles characters confronting their deep-seated worries and scaries.

Conclusion
In conclusion, "Books of Blood" is a gruesome, thrilling anthology that effectively brings to screen, if not all, then a minimum of a few of Barker's macabre tales. The storytelling maintains an air of unpredictability and the haunting score provides the proper environment for the cooling stories. From bloody disfigurement to brutally actual body scary, it provides a spectrum of fear. The stories interwoven within this anthology movie make for a compelling yet grim and chilling watching.
