Plot Summary
The story centers around Agnes White, a waitress living in an isolated motel in Oklahoma, attempting to remain numb from her past and present. She's separated from her violent ex-husband Jerry and tortured by a loss from her past - her missing boy. Her world modifications when she meets Peter Evans, an eccentric drifter suffering from war-induced trauma.

Peter discovers sanctuary in Agnes's lonely existence and they start a relationship. He confides in her about his disturbing experiences as a soldier and claims to have actually been a guinea pig for government medical experiments, triggering him to be plagued with bugs.

Descent into Madness
Their relationship takes a dark turn when they start experiencing a mysterious bug problem, which just seems noticeable to them. Peter ends up being convinced that the infestation belongs to a vast governmental conspiracy which the bugs are implanted under their skin. Horrified and paranoid, Agnes supports and thinks in Peter's misconceptions, unsuspectingly stepping onto the slippery slope of shared psychosis.

Climax
The couple's paranoia escalates, leading them to severe actions including their insulation from the outside world, the extermination of viewed bugs, and self-mutilation. All the while, Dr. Sweet, a government psychiatrist, tries to intervene but gets killed by Peter in fear. The climax reveals that there were never ever any bugs, revealing the true level of Peter and Agnes's shared deception.

Ending
In the last act, a paranoid Peter devotes suicide while Agnes comes down into complete madness. She starts conversing with a make-believe Peter and concludes - under a self-made deception - that she is the Queen bug. As the film concludes, the apartment, completely covered in tinfoil, shows the psychological breakdown of Agnes and left audiences with a stunning representation of deception, love, and scary.

Crucial Reception
Bug got combined evaluations from critics and audiences. Many praised the efficiencies of Ashley Judd and Michael Shannon but the film's extreme scenes of fear and delusion divided critics. Nevertheless, it is considered an audacious and distinct movie that deals with styles of fear, seclusion, conspiracy theories, and loss, successfully showcasing the harrowing results of shared psychosis.
